Fitbit Air VO2 Max: Why It Says Not Tracked (2026)

Yes, the Fitbit Air can show a VO2 max, but almost nobody gets one by accident. Google Health only calculates it from an outdoor run of at least 10 minutes with GPS data, and the Fitbit Air has no GPS chip, so the run has to be recorded on your phone inside the Google Health app. On 19 May 2026 Google also removed the old path that estimated your score from resting heart rate and demographics, which is why a working cardio fitness score vanished for a lot of people who do not run. And there is a third cause, the one nobody writes about: your runs may be going somewhere that never reaches Google Health at all.

I went looking for this after reading a support thread where a Fitbit Air owner had done five GPS runs and still had a blank score, and a Google community manager replied without being able to say why. That thread is still open.


What actually changed on 19 May 2026

Two things happened at once, and the second one is the part that matters.


  1. The rename is the easy half. Google now calls the metric VO2 max instead of Cardio Fitness Score. Its own Personal Health Coach announcement from April 2026 spells it out as "VO2Max (formerly Cardio Fitness Score)."

  2. The method change is the half that broke things. Google's page on the redesigned Google Health app states plainly that "Your VO2 max will be calculated during runs with GPS data" and that "As part of these changes, your score will no longer be calculated based on your demographics, such as your height and weight."


The old Fitbit score had two routes to a number. One used a GPS run and gave a precise figure. The other used your resting heart rate plus age, sex, height and weight, and gave you a broad range without any exercise at all. That second route is gone. A Google Diamond Product Expert put it bluntly in a support thread that collected 141 "same question" votes before it was locked: Google removed the feature that estimated VO2 max from demographics and resting heart rate, and you now need a minimum 10 minute GPS tracked run, possibly three runs in 30 days.

Plenty else went with it: stress score became Resilience with no number, and Sleep Profile, Snore Detection, Estimated Oxygen Variation, badges and Community Feed were all dropped. Fitbit Premium is now Google Health Premium, still $9.99 a month, with the annual plan moving to about $99.


Exactly what Google requires before it gives you a number

Straight from Google's own VO2 max help page: "Google Health only measures VO2 max during outdoor runs with GPS enabled and doesn't currently measure VO2 max while you're walking, biking, or on the treadmill. To get your first VO2 max, track a 10-minute outdoor run. If VO2 max doesn't appear after one run, you may need to track up to three runs in 30 days."


The method underneath is a pace-to-heart-rate comparison. Google describes it as comparing your running efficiency, the ratio between your pace and your heart rate, against your resting heart rate. Its advice for a better estimate is to run at least 10 minutes on flat terrain, complete multiple runs, and run faster if you can. You will find the number under Fitness, then Key metrics, then "See all" if it is not visible. The number itself is free; the AI coaching layer that interprets it is the paid part.


Worth naming the gaps, because they are why you probably ended up here. Google's troubleshooting section for VO2 max contains exactly two tips: do a GPS run, and wear your device correctly during it. There is no dedicated "VO2 max not showing" help page, and no official feature-availability-by-device matrix anywhere in Google's documentation. The tables below are what should exist and does not.


The Fitbit Air has no GPS, and that is the root of it

Google's Fitbit Air spec page lists the full sensor set as an optical heart rate monitor, a 3-axis accelerometer and gyroscope, red and infrared sensors for SpO2, a device temperature sensor and a vibration motor. The word GPS does not appear on the page. Neither does an altimeter, which is why the Air also shows a blank floors screen. Google does not list VO2 max as a Fitbit Air feature either, and its launch announcement enumerates the health metrics without mentioning it. Reviewers confirm the same: no GNSS inside, the Air borrows your phone's GPS. That same sensor list is why the Air has no blood pressure feature either, which is the other thing people routinely assume it does: does the Fitbit Air measure blood pressure.

Why your run may never reach Google Health at all

This is the cause almost nobody diagnoses, and it explains a lot of the "but I do run" complaints.


VO2 max needs a GPS run sitting inside Google Health's own data. Google says the score "can now include data from connected third-party apps," but that is conditional on what each partner actually sends. Route and map data is a separate permission from workout summaries, and most partners do not send it.

The Strava one is the sharpest. Strava's own help centre states that activities logged in Strava no longer sync to Google Health regardless of your connection settings, and that the two companies are working on more options. Sync now runs one way only, from Google Health out to Strava.


A Fitbit Air owner posted in July 2026 that their VO2 max said "Not tracked" despite running regularly, because their runs were recorded in Strava. Nobody in the thread told them that was the cause. If you record runs in Strava, Garmin Connect, Samsung Health, Oura or WHOOP and expect Google Health to pick them up, it will not. Nike Run Club and Runkeeper do not appear on Google's partner list at all.


The fix is unglamorous: start the run in the Google Health app itself, with your phone on you, outdoors, for at least 10 minutes.

The failure Google has acknowledged and not explained

Doing everything right does not guarantee a number, and this is the uncomfortable part.


A thread opened on 4 July 2026 titled "VO2 Max is not showing up in fitbit air" has collected 33 "same question" votes. The original poster logged four outdoor runs in 14 days, verified their profile metrics, restarted the device and re-added it. No VO2 max. A Google Health community manager replied two days later, confirmed the floors behaviour outright, gave steps for the skin temperature issue, and for VO2 max linked only the generic help article. She did not identify a cause and did not confirm a fix. That is the highest-level official acknowledgement that exists.


The follow-ups run through late July: 24/7 wear since launch with three to four GPS runs a week and nothing, a Charge 6 owner with a support case open for a month, an Air paired to a Pixel 8 Pro after five GPS runs whose owner is considering returning it.


The honest summary as of 10 August 2026: there is a persistent, months-old, Google-acknowledged but unexplained pattern of VO2 max failing to appear on the Fitbit Air and the Charge 6 even when the stated requirements are met. Google has published no root cause and no fix announcement. If you have met the requirements and still have nothing, you are not doing it wrong.


How much should you trust the number anyway

Less than the two decimal places suggest.


There is no peer-reviewed validation of VO2 max on the Fitbit Air, which launched in May 2026. There is also none on any Fitbit newer than the Charge 2, which is 2016 hardware: Charge 5, Charge 6, Sense, Sense 2, Versa, Inspire, Luxe and every Pixel Watch have nothing. A December 2025 systematic review in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living on wearable VO2 max accuracy covers Garmin, Polar and Apple and contains no Fitbit or Pixel Watch at all.


Worse, the two Charge 2 studies that do exist validated the old algorithm, which Google replaced in May 2026. And they disagree with each other.

"Acceptable level of validity"

Both used lab CPET as the criterion, both used a qualifying outdoor run, and both studied young, healthy, able-to-run adults. They reach opposite conclusions.


The buried finding in Freeberg is the one worth sitting with. In that study a simple non-exercise equation using only demographics beat Fitbit's exercise-calibrated Cardio Fitness Score, 7.8% mean error against 10.2%. That is a strange result to hold next to Google removing the demographics path, and Google has published no accuracy rationale for the removal.


To be fair to the change, the method-class evidence does favour it at group level. The INTERLIVE meta-analysis in Sports Medicine 2022 found exercise-based algorithms had a pooled bias of -0.09 mL/kg/min against resting-based algorithms' +2.17, with limits of agreement roughly 35% narrower. But the authors' own caveat is the point: individual-level error stays large in both classes. The exercise-based limits of agreement still run about plus or minus 10 mL/kg/min, wider than the 3 to 6 mL/kg/min gaps between Google's own fitness level bands.


Translated: even the better method has an error band wider than the distance between "average" and "excellent" on Google's own chart. Watch the trend across months, not the number this week. If you cannot run

This is the group Google's change hit hardest, and the locked 141-vote thread is full of them: rowers, cyclists, elliptical users, people with knee replacements medically told not to run, and older users. Walking, cycling and treadmill running all fail the gate. A Diamond Product Expert's response that this is expected behaviour rather than an error did not land well.


Your options are narrow but real. Polar still offers a resting Fitness Test alongside its run-based Running Index. WHOOP and Oura both estimate cardio fitness passively with no run required. Google is now on the strict side of the industry, and the passive estimate it removed is one competitors still provide.

Common questions

Does the Fitbit Air track VO2 max?

It can display one, but it cannot generate one on its own. Google Health calculates VO2 max only from an outdoor run of 10 minutes or more with GPS data, and the Fitbit Air has no GPS chip. The run has to be recorded in the Google Health app with your phone on you.


Why does my Fitbit Air VO2 max say "Not tracked"?

Four common causes: you have not done a qualifying 10 minute outdoor GPS run, you have done fewer than three in 30 days, your runs are being recorded somewhere that does not send route data to Google Health such as Strava or Garmin, or you have hit the unexplained failure that Google has acknowledged in its own support forum without publishing a cause.


What happened to my Fitbit cardio fitness score?

It was renamed VO2 max and the calculation method changed on 19 May 2026. The old path that estimated a score from your resting heart rate and demographics was removed, so if you do not run outdoors with GPS, there is no longer a route to a score.


Do I need Google Health Premium for VO2 max?

No. The number itself is free. Premium buys the AI coaching layer that interprets it, not the metric.


Can I get a VO2 max on the Fitbit Air without running?

Not from Google Health. Walking, cycling and treadmill runs all fail the requirement. Polar's resting Fitness Test, WHOOP and Oura are the mainstream alternatives that still estimate cardio fitness without a run.


The bottom line

The Fitbit Air can report a VO2 max, but only if you run outdoors for 10 minutes or more with your phone and record it in the Google Health app, and even then a documented number of people get nothing. If you bought a screenless passive tracker specifically to avoid that kind of routine, this metric is not really for you, and that is a reasonable thing to know before you spend another month troubleshooting it. If you do get a number, treat it as a trend line rather than a measurement, because the individual error band on this class of estimate is wider than the gap between fitness categories.


The metrics the Air does deliver every single day without a GPS run are the ones worth building a habit around. We did not cite Fitbit's developer documentation on cardio fitness score, which still describes the retired resting heart rate method on an API being turned down in September 2026. We did not quote Firstbeat's own accuracy figures for the pace-and-heart-rate method, because they are vendor-published. And we do not claim Google confirmed the Fitbit Air cannot produce a VO2 max: Google has made no statement either way, it simply does not list the feature.
