No. The Fitbit Air does not measure blood pressure, and no Fitbit or Pixel Watch device ever has. Google's own spec sheet lists the Air's complete sensor set as an optical heart rate monitor, a 3-axis accelerometer with gyroscope, red and infrared sensors for SpO2, a device temperature sensor and a vibration motor. No cuff, no ECG electrode, no BP feature in the software.
The confusion has a specific and fixable source: the Google Health app can display a blood pressure number imported from your medical records, so people see a BP figure inside the app and reasonably assume the band produced it. It did not. Here is what the Air actually measures, what Google is quietly working on, and which wearables give you a real number.

I went looking for a clean answer after seeing this question three times in one week in Fitbit groups, and almost every page ranking for it either hedges or gets the 2026 regulatory story backwards. That is why this post exists.
Why so many people think it does
The Google Health app can display a blood pressure reading imported from your medical records, US only. That is a records viewer, not a sensor. One widely read review's only mention of blood pressure is exactly this, the writer checking their most recent BP results inside the app. The app shows the number, the band never measured it. The second contributor is a cluster of low-quality pages making confident, unsourced claims that Fitbit tracks BP, citing nothing.
Google has never made a public statement about blood pressure on the Air, either to promise it or deny it. That is a negative result rather than a denial, but there is no hardware in the pod that could produce a reading, and hands-on reviews confirm the Air also lacks ECG and EDA, the two other electrode-based features on pricier Fitbits. For context on the rest of the device: the $99.99 Air ($129.99 for the Stephen Curry edition) went on sale 26 May 2026, runs up to 7 days per charge and weighs 5.2g. What the Fitbit Air actually does for heart health
Quite a lot, none of it pressure. The Air runs 24/7 heart rate, HRV, resting heart rate, SpO2, breathing rate, skin temperature variation, Cardio Load and Readiness. It also supports Irregular Rhythm Notifications, Google's PPG-based AFib screening, at firmware 1.245.19 and above. VO2 max is a separate case: Google Health will only calculate it from an outdoor GPS run, which the Air cannot record on its own, so most owners never see one. Every device in that first column reads No, and it is not an oversight. Fitbit's full FDA 510(k) record covers the Aria scale, the ECG App (2020), Irregular Rhythm Notifications (2022), body temperature software and Loss of Pulse Detection (2025). No blood pressure clearance of any kind, and Google files its wearable clearances under the Fitbit name, so that is the complete picture. Blood pressure is the one number your band cannot give you. The ones it can, resting heart rate, HRV and sleep, move noticeably with what you eat and drink, and that link is the part almost nobody tracks. What Google is actually building
On 6 November 2025 Fitbit Labs opened a hypertension study: up to 10,000 US participants aged 22 and over wearing a Pixel Watch 3 normally for 180 days, with a subset also wearing a 24-hour ambulatory cuff as ground truth. Participants are told upfront they will not receive medical advice, analysis or feedback.
Two things follow. The study is Pixel Watch 3 only, so neither the Air nor the Pixel Watch 4 is part of it. And this is hypertension risk screening, the same model Apple shipped, so even if it becomes a product it produces a flag, not a systolic and diastolic reading. Nothing has shipped as of August 2026.
Fitbit also holds multiple granted BP patents, none shipped. The newest, US 12,593,994 B2 granted 7 April 2026, describes a force-sensitive display plus PPG: you press a finger on the screen and the device correlates pulse amplitude against applied pressure. Earlier grants cover Korotkoff sound detection and an inflatable finger cuff. The same inventor led Fitbit's 2021 pulse arrival time study on the Sense, which never published results and never shipped. A patent filing is not a roadmap.
Which wearables actually give you a blood pressure number
Three tiers, and the difference between them matters more than the brand names.
Tier 1 is real cuff hardware: the Huawei Watch D2's 26.5mm airbag in the strap does genuine oscillometric measurement and even 24-hour ambulatory monitoring, but it is not sold in the US, and the FDA-cleared Omron HeartGuide has effectively vanished from US retail with no successor.
Tier 2 is optical estimates that need recurring cuff calibration: Samsung (US rollout from 31 March 2026, recalibrate every 28 days), WHOOP MG and Hilo Core.
Tier 3 is screening or trends with no numbers at all: Apple's hypertension notifications, Oura Ring 5's Blood Pressure Signals and RingConn's trend insights. Oura's own documentation is refreshingly blunt, saying it "does not display mmHg values. It shows dipping patterns and trends, not absolute blood pressure measurements."

Garmin and Withings both sell FDA-cleared arm cuffs that sync to their apps, the Index BPM and the $179.95 BPM Vision, but neither has a wrist device that measures pressure. Amazfit ships BP on some models, region-locked to Singapore, India and Brazil.
One newcomer deserves heavy skepticism. The Signal Ring, announced 16 July 2026 at $399, claims truly calibration-free cuffless BP from a company-reported 451-person study. There is no published paper, no disclosed accuracy figures, the company itself calls the product investigational and not FDA cleared, and a Bloomberg hands-on reportedly produced incorrect measurements. Calibration-free cuffless BP is the hardest unsolved problem in this field.
Why the optical numbers cannot be trusted yet
Nothing in a PPG waveform is measured in mmHg. Cuffless devices infer pressure from the timing or shape of the pulse wave, because arterial stiffness rises with pressure and so does pulse wave speed. The catch is that stiffness also shifts with vascular tone, stress, posture and time of day, independently of your actual blood pressure. Every optical device therefore needs a cuff to anchor its model, and the anchor drifts. The best single result comes from Falter et al., Front Cardiovasc Med 2022, testing a Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 against ambulatory monitoring in 40 people, 65% with a hypertension history. Systolic mean difference was a reassuring -2.05 mmHg. The standard deviation was 15.5 mmHg. Diastolic was -5.58 mmHg with an SD of 22.5 mmHg. The regulatory ceiling for SD is 8.0 mmHg, so the spread ran two to three times the limit while the average looked fine. The authors named the cause: an anchoring point set at calibration, which overestimates low BPs, underestimates high ones and flattens variability. Their conclusion was "not yet ready for clinical usage."
That pattern repeats. A 2022 meta-analysis of 16 studies and 974 participants found 8 of 15 devices hit a mean bias under 5 mmHg, but the authors flagged that their criterion ignored precision entirely. A 2026 re-evaluation of 22 studies against the full ISO statistics found only 5 acceptable for both systolic and diastolic. Microsoft's 1,125-person Aurora study found systolic error fell 15 to 20% when analysis was limited to the calibration posture, meaning a large share of the error is just your arm not being where it was when you calibrated.
Apple's is the only FDA-cleared feature in tier 3, and its validation paper is the most honest document in this space. In a pivotal study of 1,863 people, sensitivity was 41.2%, so roughly 6 in 10 people with untreated hypertension get no notification at all. For stage 1, where early detection matters most, sensitivity was 29.6%. Specificity was 92.3%. Practically: a notification is a prompt to go buy a cuff, and no notification means nothing. The regulatory detail is the cleanest illustration of screening versus measurement. Apple was cleared under product code SFR, "Cardiovascular Machine Learning-Based Notification Software," not DXN, the blood pressure monitor code. Notification software, not a sphygmomanometer.
The medical bodies agree. The European Society of Hypertension's most recent position is that no cuffless BP device has adequate accuracy for clinical use, and the American Heart Association's December 2025 statement says these devices have not been adequately vetted. Telling detail: validatebp.org, the AMA's device certification list, has categories for home, office, ambulatory, kiosk and wrist cuffs. It has no cuffless category at all.
The 2026 regulatory whiplash nobody is explaining
Three FDA documents are live right now, and they do not agree.
On 6 January 2026 FDA finalised its General Wellness guidance for low risk devices. For the first time it states that products using non-invasive sensing to estimate physiologic parameters, naming blood pressure explicitly, can fall under enforcement discretion. It is conditional, not a free pass: the product must not output values mimicking clinical ones unless validated, and must not guide clinical action.
On 16 September 2025 FDA published a safety communication telling consumers not to use unauthorised blood pressure devices, specifically including software features on smartwatches and smart rings, regardless of brand. It is still live and unchanged.
On 23 January 2026 FDA published a draft guidance on cuffless BP devices setting the acceptance criteria: mean error within 5.0 mmHg and SD under 8.0 mmHg, plus a test requiring accuracy to hold after a real BP shift of at least 15 mmHg systolic. The document that would define what "validated" means is still a draft, five months past its comment close.
So one permits validated BP numbers under wellness, one tells consumers not to trust wearable BP, and the one defining validation is unfinished. The market read the first and moved: STAT reported in May 2026 on BP wearables flooding the market post-guidance, quoting Oura's chief medical officer that it gives them confidence to release features sooner.
The honest framing is that 2026 was the year US regulation loosened, not the year the technology got better. Samsung's US launch, WHOOP's reprieve, Oura's feature and Signal Ring's existence all trace to a January guidance document, not to a validation breakthrough.
What to do instead
Buy a validated upper-arm cuff, and check it against validatebp.org or STRIDE BP before you buy. Upper arm beats wrist. The 2025 AHA/ACC guideline kept the thresholds unchanged from 2017:

Technique matters more than people expect. Empty your bladder, skip caffeine, exercise and smoking for 30 minutes, then sit quietly 5 minutes with your back supported, feet flat and legs uncrossed. Correctly sized cuff on the bare upper arm at heart level, no talking, 2 to 3 readings a minute apart averaged, morning and evening. Guidelines act on a 7-day home average with day one discarded.
See a doctor if your home average is 130/80 or above across a week, or if any single reading hits 180/120, which is urgent and an emergency with symptoms. Treat an Apple Watch style notification as a prompt to cuff-measure for a week, not a diagnosis. If you are already on treatment, do not judge whether it is working from a cuffless device, because none are validated for that.

Does the Fitbit Air measure blood pressure?
No. Its sensors are optical heart rate, accelerometer and gyroscope, red and infrared for SpO2, and device temperature. There is no cuff and no BP feature, and no Fitbit or Pixel Watch has ever shipped one.
Why does my Google Health app show a blood pressure number?
Because the app can display readings imported from your US medical records. That number came from a clinic or a cuff you used elsewhere, not from the band.

Can a smart ring measure blood pressure?
Not as a number. Oura Ring 5 and RingConn Gen 3 provide trends or patterns and both state explicitly that they do not output mmHg values. The Signal Ring claims to, but it is investigational and unpublished.
The bottom line
The Fitbit Air is a good $99 band for heart rate, HRV, sleep and AFib screening. It is not a blood pressure monitor and nothing in it could be. If a BP number appeared in your app, it was imported from your health records. If you want your actual pressure, a validated upper-arm cuff costs less than most wearables and is the only method any current hypertension guideline endorses.
