Does Fitbit Measure Blood Pressure?

No Fitbit measures blood pressure, and none ever has. Not the Charge, not the Sense, not the Versa, not the Inspire, not the Fitbit Air, and not a single Pixel Watch. There has never been a cuff, a pressure sensor, or an FDA clearance for blood pressure anywhere in Fitbit's history. What changed is that on 12 August 2026 Google announced a feature called Blood pressure trends, shipping September 2026 on four devices. It estimates a monthly trend. It is not a reading, it is not cleared, and your Fitbit is probably not on the list.


I went into this expecting a simple no, and the honest answer turned out to have three parts that are easy to blur together. The three-part answer

Measure your blood pressure? No. No Fitbit or Pixel Watch has ever shipped hardware capable of it, and Google does not list blood pressure among the sensors on any device spec page. Note the wording: Google has never published a denial. The evidence is absence from every official sensor list, not a statement.


Estimate a blood pressure trend? From September 2026, four devices will. Google's only explicit device list, on healthapp.google, is Pixel Watch 3, 4, 5 and the Google Fitbit Air. The output is a monthly summary, general wellness only, with no FDA clearance.


Track a number you measured somewhere else? Almost entirely no, and the single exception surprises people.

Older models are the same answer with fewer features. Charge 5, Charge 4, Charge 3, Luxe, Inspire 2, Inspire HR, the Versa and Sense back catalogue, Ionic, Alta HR, Blaze and Surge: none measures blood pressure, and none is on the trends list. Pixel Watch 1 and Pixel Watch 2 are not on it either.


One artifact makes that absence concrete. When Fitbit launched the Sense in August 2020 it called the device its most advanced health smartwatch and listed every sensor it could claim: the world's first EDA sensor for stress, plus ECG, SpO2 and skin temperature. Blood pressure appears nowhere in that release.


The cleanest way to see why "my Fitbit detects heart problems" does not imply "my Fitbit measures blood pressure" is the Versa 4. It sits on Google's Irregular Rhythm Notifications supported-device list and has no electrical sensor at all, because irregular rhythm detection is derived from the optical sensor. Different sensor, different claim, different regulatory pathway. That same gap between a measured signal and an inferred one runs through how Pixel Watch and Fitbit stress tracking actually works.


What actually ships in September

Google announced Blood pressure trends on 12 August 2026 as part of a suite it calls Health Guardian. Its description of the mechanism, verbatim:

"Our devices passively measure your pulse and motion patterns throughout the month to estimate your blood pressure trends without requiring a cuff or manual calibration."


What you get is a summary in the Google Health app on the first of the month, after a month of wear, and Google's wording makes it conditional: "If it detects a persistently high trend, it delivers a personalized summary on the first of the month ... acting as a timely prompt to make proactive lifestyle changes, confirm your numbers with a blood pressure monitor, or consider discussing the results with a healthcare professional." Whether a summary arrives every month regardless is not stated anywhere. Neither is whether it ever shows a number in mmHg: no Google page announcing the feature contains that string at all, and none says it does not. Treat that as an open question, not a confirmed no.


Google's own disclaimer is the most useful thing on the page:

"This product is intended for general wellness purposes only and is not intended to diagnose, mitigate, prevent, treat, or cure any disease. The data provided by this product is not intended for medical use, not a replacement for a blood pressure monitor ... This product is not a prescreener for hypertension, does not provide real-time blood pressure readings for clinical purposes, and should not be relied upon for blood pressure management, medication adjustments or treatment plans. This feature is not for individuals who are pregnant."


There is no FDA clearance, authorization or submission behind it, and that is not just an argument from silence. Google's sibling feature, Breathing Emergency Detection, carries an explicit footnote saying it has not been cleared or evaluated by the FDA and is CE marked in the EU. When Google has a regulatory status to declare, it declares it. Blood pressure trends gets a wellness disclaimer with no regulatory language at all.


It is not gated behind Google Health Premium, whatever you may have read; that subscription footnote is anchored to Google Health Coach. The device split matters more anyway. The overwhelming majority of Fitbits in the world are Charge, Versa, Sense, Inspire and Luxe models, and not one of them is on the list for the only blood-pressure-adjacent feature Fitbit has ever had.


The number Google does not publish

Google says the technology "was prospectively validated across diverse populations in free-living conditions against the gold standard 24-hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring," and credits "a Fitbit Hypertension Labs study." It publishes no accuracy figure on any consumer page and links no study for blood pressure.


A number does exist. A December 2025 preprint by Di Achille, Cai, Wu and colleagues, mostly Google Research authors plus Stephen Juraschek of Beth Israel Deaconess, reports the validation that matches Google's description. Google has not said this is the study, so treat the link as a strong inference rather than a citation. It is a preprint, not peer reviewed, and it states Alphabet funding explicitly.


In its primary validation, 7 days of real-world monitoring against 24-hour ABPM at a 130/80 threshold, n=196:

Sensitivity of 65.8% means the model missed roughly a third of the people who actually had hypertension by the reference standard. That is the number a person asking whether their Fitbit checks their blood pressure needs, and it appears on no Google consumer page.


The paper's own context makes it less damning and more interesting. The authors call 65.8% comparable to traditional cuffed devices, and report that initial office screening in the same study did worse, at 55.3%. Opportunistic hypertension detection is simply hard. Two limits travel with the figure: the sample excluded people already on blood pressure medication and people with known cardiovascular disease, which is exactly the group most interested in the feature. For scale, Apple's FDA-cleared hypertension notification feature reports 41.2% sensitivity in its own pivotal study. The reference standards and populations differ, so the two are not directly comparable, but they share a shape. Both miss a large share of the people who have hypertension, and the cleared one misses more.

Can a Fitbit at least track a reading from my cuff?

This is the under-covered half of the question, and the answer is close to a flat no.


Manual entry does not exist. Google's page on adding data to Google Health lists the manual flows: activities and exercise, weight, water, food, menstrual periods and symptoms, body temperature. Blood pressure is absent. Blood glucose has its own dedicated logging page. Blood pressure has no equivalent.


Health Connect supports blood pressure. Google Health does not read it. Android's Health Connect has a full BloodPressureRecord type in its Vitals category. Google Health publishes its own Health Connect read and write lists, and blood pressure appears in neither. Google says it plainly: "Blood pressure data from Withings blood pressure devices is not yet supported in Google Health." So a reading written into Health Connect by a connected cuff sits there, other apps can read it, and Google Health shows you nothing. Apple Health is the same answer, in both directions.


Cuff vendors are not integrated. Omron Connect lists Apple Health, Google Fit and Samsung Health, and Google Fit is itself being retired. iHealth claims a Fitbit integration but does not document which data types, and since the current Fitbit Web API exposes no blood pressure endpoint, a transfer of readings is not mechanically possible through the documented API. No cuff vendor appears on Google Health's supported third-party device list.


The one exception, and it explains most of the confusion. The Google Health app can display a blood pressure value pulled from your connected medical records, in the United States only. Health Connect's medical records format maps vital signs to FHIR Observation resources, and that profile includes blood pressure as LOINC panel 85354-9. So a US user whose clinic took a reading at a visit can open the app and find a blood pressure number sitting there. It came from a chart, not from a wrist. That is the most likely origin of "my Fitbit shows my blood pressure."


Why so many people think otherwise

Four real causes, and none of them is carelessness on the reader's part. The app genuinely shows some people a blood pressure number, for the medical records reason above. Google is shipping something literally called blood pressure trends next month. Fitbit has been publicly working on blood pressure for a decade, through a 2021 pulse arrival time study on the Sense, a patent family going back to a 2016 priority date, and a 10,000-person hypertension study running on Pixel Watch 3 since November 2025, none of which shipped a measurement feature but all of which produced headlines. And a wall of unsourced content-farm pages asserts Fitbit blood pressure capability; during the research for this post, two of them ranked on page one, one above official Google sources.


There is a fifth, quieter cause. ECG, irregular rhythm notifications and SpO2 all sound clinical and all involve the heart or blood, so readers reasonably assume one of them is a pressure measurement. None is.


Why cuffless blood pressure is hard

Nothing in an optical pulse signal is measured in mmHg. Cuffless devices infer pressure from the timing or shape of the pulse wave, because arterial stiffness rises with pressure and so does wave speed. The trouble is that stiffness also shifts with vascular tone, stress, posture and time of day, independently of blood pressure. So the model needs a cuff to anchor it, and the anchor drifts.


Falter and colleagues put a number on that drift in 2022, testing a Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 against ambulatory monitoring in 40 people. The mean error looked fine, at -2.05 mmHg systolic. The spread did not: standard deviations of 15.5 mmHg systolic and 22.5 mmHg diastolic, against a validation ceiling of 8 mmHg. Their explanation is the whole problem in one sentence. After calibration, the watch "tends to keep its BP measurements closer to the calibration point than the BPs are in reality."


Optical sensors have well-documented limits generally, which we covered in how accurate your heart rate monitor really is and in the heart rate accuracy tool. Blood pressure asks far more of that signal than heart rate does.


The rest of the market splits the same way. Omron's HeartGuide is the only FDA-cleared wrist device with real cuff hardware, and it is effectively unavailable new in the US. Samsung's Galaxy Watch feature gives systolic and diastolic numbers but needs a cuff recalibration every 28 days, and Samsung states it is a wellness feature not subject to FDA clearance. WHOOP's Blood Pressure Insights remains uncleared: FDA closed a warning letter in June 2026 and said it does not intend to enforce over the modified product, which is enforcement discretion, not clearance. Oura's Blood Pressure Signals is explicit that it "does not measure actual blood pressure in mmHg," covered in whether the Oura Ring 5 is worth it.


The regulatory picture is genuinely contradictory

Three FDA documents are live right now and they do not agree. In January 2026 FDA finalized its General Wellness guidance, which permits products that "estimate, infer, or output physiologic parameters (e.g. blood pressure, oxygen saturation, blood glucose, heart rate variability)" as low-risk wellness devices, provided the values are validated. The clause that explains the year is what counts as validation: manufacturer testing does. That is why a company can ship a blood pressure estimate on the strength of its own unpublished study.


Meanwhile FDA's September 2025 safety communication is still live and unrevised, telling consumers not to use unauthorized wearable software features that "claim to measure or estimate blood pressure," which reaches past measurement alone. And the draft guidance that would define accuracy testing for cuffless devices, proposing a mean error within 5 mmHg and a standard deviation under 8 mmHg, is still a draft five months after comments closed. The fair summary: 2026 was the year US regulation loosened, not the year the technology got better.


What to do if you actually want to know your blood pressure

Buy a validated upper-arm cuff. Upper arm beats wrist. Check the model against validatebp.org or STRIDE BP, both of which list validated devices and neither of which has a cuffless category at all.


Then use it properly, because technique moves the number more than most people expect. Per the American Heart Association's measurement statement: empty your bladder, and avoid caffeine, exercise and smoking for at least 30 minutes beforehand. Sit for 3 to 5 minutes first, back supported, feet flat on the floor. Use a cuff whose bladder encircles 75% to 100% of your arm, at heart level. Nobody talks during the reading, including you. Take at least two readings separated by 1 to 2 minutes, morning and evening, and average across at least 7 days rather than trusting a single number.

The AHA's own summary of that guideline is blunt about wearables: "Reliance on cuffless devices, including smartwatches, for accurate blood pressure measurements should be avoided until these devices demonstrate greater precision and reliability."


Talk to a doctor if your home average sits at 130/80 or above over a week, or if any single reading hits 180/120 or above, which is urgent and an emergency with symptoms. If a Google trend flag or an Apple Watch notification does arrive, treat it as a prompt to cuff-measure for a week, not as a diagnosis. And if you are already on treatment, no cuffless device is validated for monitoring whether it is working.

Does Fitbit measure blood pressure in 2026?

No. No Fitbit or Pixel Watch has ever measured blood pressure. Google's blood pressure trends feature, arriving September 2026 on four devices, estimates a monthly trend rather than taking a reading, and carries no FDA clearance.


Which Fitbits get the new blood pressure trends feature?

Google's only explicit device list names Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, Pixel Watch 5 and the Google Fitbit Air. Charge, Versa, Sense, Inspire, Luxe, Ace and the first two Pixel Watches do not appear on any supported list.


Does the blood pressure trends feature show a number in mmHg?

Google neither claims nor denies it. No Google page about the feature contains the string mmHg, and the disclaimer says it does not provide real-time blood pressure readings for clinical purposes. Treat it as unstated.


Can I log my blood pressure readings in the Google Health app?

No. Manual blood pressure entry is not among the supported flows, blood pressure is absent from both the Health Connect and Apple Health integrations, and no cuff vendor appears on the supported third-party device list.


Why does my Google Health app show a blood pressure number then?

Almost certainly from connected medical records. In the United States, the app can surface vital signs from a healthcare provider's records, blood pressure included. That value came from a clinic visit, not from your tracker.


How accurate is Google's blood pressure trends feature?

Google publishes no accuracy figure. The preprint that matches Google's description reports 65.8% sensitivity and 90.0% specificity against 24-hour ambulatory monitoring in 196 people, meaning it missed about a third of the people who had hypertension by the reference standard.


Does a Fitbit ECG measure blood pressure?

No. An ECG records the electrical activity of your heart. Blood pressure is the force of blood against artery walls. Different measurements from different physics, and no Fitbit ECG feature reports a blood pressure value.


The bottom line

If you own a Fitbit and you want to know your blood pressure, the device will not tell you, and buying a newer one will not change that. Four devices start estimating a monthly trend in September 2026, on a model that missed roughly a third of hypertension cases in the closest study we have, and Google's own disclaimer calls it not a replacement for a blood pressure monitor. A validated upper-arm cuff, used with decent technique twice a day for a week, will tell you more than any wearable on the market.

A note on what this post leaves out. Google has never published a statement denying that its devices measure blood pressure, so nothing here is framed as a Google confirmation. WHOOP's feature is not FDA cleared; FDA closed a warning letter, which is not the same thing. The device list comes from healthapp.google alone, because Google's other two pages give different formulations. Neither supporting paper for blood pressure trends is peer reviewed. Apple's rumored Series 12 blood pressure hardware is excluded entirely, since that event has not happened. And no figure here comes from an unsourced aggregator page, several of which currently outrank Google's own documentation on this query.
