Fitbit's calorie tracking has a reputation for being accurate, and on paper it is: across dozens of studies, its average bias is close to zero. That number is misleading. Fitbit calorie burn swings from 5 calories per minute under to 6 calories per minute over on any given reading, so the average cancels out while individual days stay far off. Running is its best case at roughly 4 to 15 percent error, walking its worst at 54 to 69 percent overestimation, and its newest devices have never been independently tested. Running Is Fitbit's Best Case

When effort is steady and rhythmic, Fitbit's heart-rate-to-calorie model holds up well. A 2019 Health and Technology study of the Charge 2 across 59 adults put running error in the single digits to mid-teens. This is the activity where you can most trust the number.


Walking Is the Worst Case

Low-intensity walking is where Fitbit falls apart. The same 2019 study measured 54 to 69 percent overestimation for the Charge 2, because the algorithm credits energy the slow pace does not actually cost. If most of your movement is casual walking, expect the daily active-calorie number to run high.


The Near-Zero Average Trap

Do not read Fitbit's tiny average bias as precision. The Chevance meta-analysis shows the average is near zero only because large overestimates and underestimates cancel. On any single day, the Charge HR ranged from 17 to 85 percent error depending on intensity. Averages hide that swing.
